I'd love to hear how did this setup work for you. I think I've seen the video you're talking about, I was considering doing the same thing.

Hi to all from Scotland,
Absolute newbie to aquaponics, thinking of setting up an IBC system in a greenhouse with heating so as I can keep Tilapia warm in the winter, I wont have anything ready until next year (which is when I retire).
So be prepared for lots of questions, I'm ready to learn. ;D
Thanks in advance Harry

Sounds good. Exciting times, crops this summer then hopefully.
You are way ahead of me, I have a few tasks before I can cycle.
Mostly build my system but this will not happen until I have fixed the fence and built the greenhouse (the fence will be behind the greenhouse hence the need to fix first)
So I may have something to work with by mid summer, if I am lucky. Greenhouse may just be a standard growing greenhouse this summer to at least get something productive out of it whilst I set up and test. Probably be too late to cycle and grow aquaponically this season by the time I get it up and working.

What fish are you working with? I may chuck a couple of goldfish in to cycle but ultimately trout seem to be more worthwhile as you can eat them.

I am west of London so will have a similar climate to SE London.

Hey Gristo, thanks for the interest. The garden is finished, and the new greenhouse is well underway. I anticipate being cycled by mid April at the moment...

Fish Problems / Re: Perch - the ideal fish if I could find any !?

Am yet to build and set up my system this year (Surrey), but my research makes me think you are mostly correct. However trout may be suitable.

Trout fingerlings appear to be available and whilst its true they don't like the heat it depends where your tank is, if its out of direct sunlight and buried or partially buried then the ground will act as a heat sink and draw some of the heat from the water keeping it cool. If you dig a hole in your garden it feels cool not more than a few inches below the surface even on a hot day. Also the bigger the tank the better as it will be more stable in terms of temperature and hot days will not have such a big impact.

As for perch, I don't know but I will be interested to hear if you do manage to source these and how they turn out.
I have fished canals and lakes and caught many perch (presumably European us still being in Europe at the moment). I wouldn't suggest that as a source for your system, but it does prove that the live just about anywhere (have even caught them in rivers with reasonably flow) so they must be reasonably hardy. Still water (lakes and some canals) can be low in dissolved oxygen and warm in the summer as the water does not move and they seem to be quite happy.

Let us all know how you get on.

Fish Problems / Perch - the ideal fish if I could find any !?

Dilemma of what fish to choose? (I live in Essex)

tilapia - too cold in UK! + not high enough in Omega 3 one of the key benefits of eating fish.

trout - summers (I live in Essex) will get too hot I think.

Carp/catfish - not tasty - according to most people!

Perch - seem to be tasty and temperature tolerant - however, I can't find any!! Please help.

Also please disagree with any conclusions above.

Hi all, Mr Newbie here.

Anyone just set up (setting up) a system they can describe and send pictures of to someone new to the world of Aquaponics.

Looking at building a system in the greenhouse in the spring.

All advice and tips gratefully received.   ;D

Hey Neil have you got anywhere with your system since the summer?
I am also new to the Aquaponics idea and interested to know if you are up and running.
